Counter space is the hidden cost of home espresso. Many machines are deep, tall and wide, and that's before you add a grinder, a milk jug and a knock box. In an apartment kitchen or a coffee corner, a small espresso machine is often the difference between making espresso at home and not bothering.

The good news is that small no longer means bad. Several compact machines pull proper shots and steam milk well. The trade-offs are smaller water tanks, less steam power for big batches and fewer bells and whistles. What matters is the footprint you can spare, whether you make milk drinks, and how much room you'll leave for a grinder.

Below are six compact picks, from a full-featured 54mm machine that fits under any cabinet to a hand-pumped portable maker for travel. We list the dimensions for each so you can measure before you buy.

The best small espresso machines, reviewed

1. Breville Bambino: Best Overall

Who it's for: anyone who wants proper espresso and manual milk steaming in very little space.

The Bambino is one of the most compact machines with a full steam wand. Breville gives its dimensions as about 11.9 x 6.1 x 13.5 inches. Inside, it has Breville's ThermoJet heating with about a 3-second heat-up, a 54mm portafilter designed for an 18 g dose and low-pressure pre-infusion, plus single- and dual-wall baskets.

The fast heat-up suits small kitchens as much as the size does: no long warm-up, no waiting for a boiler. The steam wand is manual, so you'll learn to texture milk yourself. If you'd rather not, the Plus below does it for you.

Pros

  • Very small footprint
  • About 3-second heat-up
  • 54mm portafilter with pre-infusion
  • Proper manual steam wand

Cons

  • No grinder
  • Smaller water tank than the Plus
  • Manual milk only

2. De'Longhi Dedica Arte: Slimmest Machine

Who it's for: people with a narrow gap on the counter, like the space between a toaster and the wall.

De'Longhi markets the Dedica Arte (EC885M) as just 6 inches wide, the brand's slimmest machine. The listing describes a 15-bar pump, a 35 oz removable water tank, 3-level temperature control and the "My LatteArt" manual steam wand. The double drip tray adjusts or comes out to fit taller cups.

It's long and narrow rather than small overall, so check depth against your counter. One reviewer noted the steam wand has a single on/off steam setting, which is normal at this price tier. It works with pre-ground coffee in pressurized baskets and with fresh-ground coffee if you add a grinder.

Pros

  • About 6 inches wide
  • 3-level temperature control
  • Manual steam wand designed for latte art
  • Adjustable drip tray for tall cups

Cons

  • Long depth for its width
  • Basic steam control
  • Smaller tank than the Bambino Plus

3. Breville Bambino Plus: Best Compact for Milk Drinks

Who it's for: latte and cappuccino drinkers who want hands-free milk in a small machine.

The Bambino Plus shares the Bambino's shot hardware and adds an automatic steam wand with 3 milk temperatures and 3 texture levels. It's a bit larger, at about 11.9 x 7.4 x 14.3 inches, with a bigger water tank. Breville includes a tamper, Razor dosing tool and 16 oz milk jug.

For a small kitchen where several people make milk drinks, it's the easiest compact machine to live with. Our Bambino vs Bambino Plus comparison covers the differences in detail.

Pros

  • Automatic, hands-free milk texturing
  • Fast heat-up
  • Larger water tank than the Bambino
  • Fits under most cabinets

Cons

  • Higher price tier than the Bambino
  • Still needs a grinder

4. De'Longhi Stilosa: Best Cheap Compact

Who it's for: budget buyers who want to try espresso without taking over the counter.

The Stilosa is De'Longhi's entry-level pump machine. It uses a 15-bar pump, a stainless steel boiler and a manual milk frother, and the listing gives a 1-liter removable water tank. It measures about 13.5 x 8.1 x 11.2 inches.

It's simple and compact, works with pre-ground coffee, and is one of the cheapest ways into pump espresso. It won't give you the control of the Breville machines, and most people who get hooked eventually upgrade.

Pros

  • Budget price tier
  • Compact and simple
  • Works with pre-ground coffee

Cons

  • Limited shot control
  • Basic steam performance

5. CASABREWS CM5418: Best Budget With Gauge

Who it's for: budget buyers who like visual feedback while they learn.

The CM5418 is a compact stainless steel machine with a 20-bar pump, a built-in pressure gauge, a steam wand and a 34 oz removable water tank, per its listing. The gauge gives quick feedback on whether your grind and tamp are in the right area.

As with any pump rating, "20 bar" is a maximum, not the brewing pressure; espresso brews around 9 bars at the coffee. Treat the gauge as a learning aid.

Pros

  • Pressure gauge
  • Compact stainless body
  • Steam wand

Cons

  • Fewer published specs than big brands
  • Less consistent than the Breville machines

6. WACACO Nanopresso: Smallest (Portable)

Who it's for: travelers, campers and anyone with no counter space at all.

The Nanopresso isn't an electric machine; it's a hand-pumped espresso maker. WACACO says its pumping system reaches up to 18 bars (261 PSI) with your hands. Listings give a height of about 6.1 inches and a weight of about 336 g, and it makes one small shot at a time from hot water and finely ground coffee.

It needs no electricity, which makes it the most compact way to get a pressurized shot. It doesn't steam milk, and you'll need a kettle and a fine grinder; a hand grinder pairs naturally. See our guide on how to make espresso without a machine for how it compares with a moka pot and AeroPress.

Pros

  • Pocket-sized and light
  • No electricity needed
  • Pressurized shots

Cons

  • One shot at a time, by hand
  • No milk steaming
  • Needs hot water and a fine grind

How to choose a small espresso machine

Measure three dimensions, not one

Width gets all the attention, but depth and height matter as much. Measure:

  • Height under your upper cabinets, plus room to open the lid or lift the water tank out.
  • Depth of your counter, leaving space in front to lock in the portafilter.
  • Width, including space for a grinder beside the machine.

Water tank vs footprint

Smaller machines carry smaller tanks. A 35–47 oz tank covers a few drinks; a larger tank means fewer refills. If the tank lifts out from the top or front, you can refill it without pulling the machine out from under the cabinets.

Milk drinks

Compact machines steam milk more slowly than large boiler machines. For one or two drinks at a time, it's fine. If you'd rather skip steaming entirely, a separate frother can sit in a cupboard; see our best milk frother picks.

Leave room for a grinder

A small machine and a big grinder defeat the purpose. A compact electric grinder, or a hand grinder that lives in a drawer, keeps the setup small. Our manual coffee grinder guide covers hand grinders that grind fine enough for espresso.

Pressurized vs non-pressurized baskets

Most compact machines include dual-wall (pressurized) baskets that forgive pre-ground coffee and inconsistent tamping. Single-wall baskets need a good grinder but give better espresso. Machines that include both, like the Bambinos, let you start easy and grow.

Heat-up time

In a small kitchen, speed matters. Thermoblock and ThermoJet machines like the Bambino are ready in seconds; machines with small boilers take longer. If you want espresso in the time it takes to grind, look for fast heat-up.

Small kitchen setup ideas

  • Group the station. Machine, grinder and knock box side by side, with a tray or mat underneath, makes cleanup quick and keeps grounds off the rest of the counter.
  • Store the extras. The milk jug, tamper and scale fit in a drawer or a small caddy; only the machine needs to live on the counter.
  • Use the cabinet above. Keep beans, cups and cleaning supplies in the cupboard directly above the machine so everything is in reach.
  • Mind the steam. Steam wands release moisture, so avoid parking the machine right under shelves that hold paper goods.

How we chose

We compared manufacturer and retailer specifications (Breville, De'Longhi, CASABREWS and WACACO product pages and listings), including published dimensions and tank sizes, and owner feedback on daily use in small kitchens. Where a figure comes from reviews rather than the maker, we say so. We did not test these machines ourselves. FAQ

What is the smallest real espresso machine?

Among pump machines with a steam wand, the Breville Bambino is one of the smallest at about 11.9 x 6.1 x 13.5 inches, and the De'Longhi Dedica Arte is one of the slimmest at about 6 inches wide. If you only need espresso and no milk steaming, a hand-pumped portable maker like the WACACO Nanopresso is far smaller still.

Do small espresso machines make good espresso?

They can. Compact machines like the Breville Bambino use the same principles as larger machines: a pump, a portafilter and controlled temperature. The bigger factor is the grinder. A small machine with a good grinder will make better espresso than a large machine with stale pre-ground coffee.

Can a small espresso machine steam milk?

Most can. The Bambino, Bambino Plus, Dedica Arte, Stilosa and CASABREWS CM5418 all have steam wands. Compact machines have smaller heaters or tanks, so they suit one or two milk drinks at a time rather than a long row of lattes.

What size espresso machine fits under kitchen cabinets?

Standard US upper cabinets leave roughly 18 inches above the counter, so most compact machines fit. Allow extra room to lift the lid or slide out the water tank, and measure your own space, because cabinet heights vary.

Is a mini espresso machine worth it for travel?

If you want espresso on the road or while camping, a hand-pumped maker like the WACACO Nanopresso is light and needs no electricity, only hot water and finely ground coffee. It makes one small shot at a time and takes some effort to pump, so it complements rather than replaces a home machine.

Verdict

The Breville Bambino is the best small espresso machine for most kitchens: tiny footprint, fast heat-up and real espresso. Choose the De'Longhi Dedica Arte if width is your limit, the Bambino Plus for hands-free lattes, the Stilosa or CASABREWS for a budget start, and the WACACO Nanopresso if you need espresso anywhere.
